It's reminiscent of Saudi Arabia – until you reach the first edge of the mountains. Here, it seems to rain occasionally, as clouds rain down from the sea. Farms accompany us, but th\"\u0026\"ey are more like scree gardens with some vegetation. Here and there, real farmhouses – but these are at most every 20 kilometers. Well hidden, at the foot of a mountain, where a spring probably provided the basis for the construction of a farm. You push f\"\u0026\"urther into the mountains, along a valley characterized by wild rock formations, with towering walls on both sides of the road. We passed the Carp Cliff and took the Kuseb Pass. They are stony gravel roads, which are a bit quieter here and there because t\"\u0026\"hey are sandier and lack cobblestone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd suddenly, after many hours of driving, we find ourselves once again in front of a natural wonder. At the foot of the Gaub Pass, the Gaub River bursts through two rock formations. On the left, red, crumbling\"\u0026\" sandstone; on the right, a giant, meteorite-like stone, more like a mountain, whose dark brown color doesn't really fit the picture. As if it were lying there: immobile and monstrous, like a recently shattered star cruiser. Beneath the rock, in the shado\"\u0026\"w of the brown mountain colossus, a curved bridge, whose shape is designed to withstand the flooding from the Gaub River. Whitewashed, historically shaped and adapted to the limited resources available, more Romanesque than modern, it stands like a toy in\"\u0026\" the far too vast landscape. A picture like from another planet. The cool river forms a basin just in front of the giant brown stone, lending the bridge the charm of a place of tranquility. One would like to linger here, yet the struggle for survival rage\"\u0026\"s all around, marked by the heat of the day and the barrenness of the land. It is scorching hot and dry. The scorching red earth and the few plants immediately drive any visitor into the shade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom Solitaire to the Naukluft Mountains, it is a stone's throw of about 20 kilometers. We\"\u0026\" are incredibly lucky. Apparently, God spread the hand of rain over the Naukluft Mountains just a few days ago. The valley we turned into from the blazing heat greets us with blooming plants. The scent of jasmine wafts into the vehicle. The earth is darke\"\u0026\"r red than in the other valley. The Solitaire Lodge is closed – the recent pandemic has prevented tourism for almost two years. We are among the few, and among the first, to return to Solitaire and the Naukluft Mountains. The Naukluft Lodge is a paradise.\"\u0026\" The view from our lodge building could be straight out of the movie \"\"The Martian,\"\" were the red plains not bathed in all shades of green for the first time in seven years. Our guide, Werner, took us into his care at 6:00 a.m. He was a typical ranger: lean, dark-skinned, very kind—and an experienced guide. Finally, not having to driv\"\u0026\"e was a relief. Werner, who knows the area well, told us a lot—and we had a thousand questions for him as we drove through the cool Namibian night. Here and there along the roadside, there were lights from the widely scattered farms of the Naukluft. It's \"\u0026\"amazing how people can earn their living here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sun slowly climbed the sky—and burst a dark yellow over the Naukluft Mountains. Our jeep rattled through the Naukluft plateau. The gravel road was packed with bumps and formed countless small bumps\"\u0026\" that rhythmically battered the jeep's suspension. A paradox in itself – the more vehicles use the road, the more stagnant waves disrupt the journey. At times, it's impossible to avoid the waves, and the vehicle rattles and groans like I've never experien\"\u0026\"ced before.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArriving at the gate to Sossusvlei National Park, we paid the fee and drove into the park – once again over sandy and gravel roads. We passed numerous mountains, which now increasingly alternated with dunes. After all, we were actually \"\u0026\"heading straight for the Namib. It was actually coming towards us – not us towards it. After all, every few years it devours the next hill – driven by wind and storms. Each dune has a number as its designation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter another 20 kilometers or so pas\"\u0026\"t fascinating landscapes, sometimes accompanied by springboks and oryxes, and occasionally by a large herd of zebras, we came close to a large pool of water. This turned out to be a shallow lake – a giant puddle – but impenetrable and only accessible by t\"\u0026\"he edge. Werner parked the Toyota Jeep at its edge. According to Werner, we could choose either to climb all the way up Big Daddy, the highest dune in the world – or turn back before reaching it. He would see us clearly from the camp near the Jeep. At the\"\u0026\" foot of Big Mama, opposite Big Daddy, behind the giant puddle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe chose the tough option and trudged uphill for an hour or so – through mercilessly deep desert sand. At 9 a.m., it wasn't blazing hot yet, but rather lukewarm. Gekkos accompanied us \"\u0026\"– their footprints were clearly visible. They flew across the sand, while I crawled. Luk was faster but waited patiently for the old man. Near the top, I had to take constant breaks. In the end, I only managed a maximum of 15 steps before the next break. \"\u0026\"The sand was so deep, there was always the chance of tipping over to the left and right. Once at the top, we could see the incredible scenery of the Namib for miles in all directions. To the right was the giant puddle, directly below us was the petrified \"\u0026\"forest, to the left and behind us was endless sand, shaped by the wind into beautiful troughs. We cheered when we reached the top and celebrated ourselves like heroes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe return journey passed the 2,000-year-old petrified forest, whose rainwater h\"\u0026\"ad been blocked by the advancing dune sand.
