Botswana boasts many national parks – including the Nxai Pan in the heart of the country. We camped in the inhospitable ""pan"" – which offers plenty of sand and bushes, and all kinds of trees in a sparse stand. The campsite in the middle of the park w"&"as an incredible place. In the middle of nowhere, there was a shower building, numerous large old trees, and about five other Land Rovers, some of which had arrived as a group. Everyone went on safari in the morning and evening, and they met up in the eve"&"ning and at lunch. One night, we heard the lions of the area – and soon after, the elephant that ""belongs"" to this campsite. Their roar was deafening – and impressive – even from about 100 meters away. In the days that followed, I painted this hunting s"&"cene – which we hadn't seen in person, though. It is intended to depict the power of lions – and their relentless struggle for survival, but also the wonderful coloring and shape of the wildebeest – which rightly deserves its name ""Wilderbeasts"" in Engl"&"ish.
