Since it opened in 1927, the Nürburgring has been one of the most legendary venues in motorsport. In the 1930s, the Mercedes Silver Arrows and Auto Union engaged in thrilling Grand Prix duels here. In 1935, Tazio Nuvolari caused one of the greatest sensations in racing history by winning in an underdog Alfa Romeo. In 1957, Juan Manuel Fangio staged a spectacular comeback in the Maserati 250F, a feat that is still regarded today as one of his greatest achievements. Jackie Stewart gave the Nordschleife the nickname ‘Green Hell’, and in 1975 Niki Lauda became the first driver to complete a lap in under seven minutes. Formula 1 raced on the Nordschleife until 1976. After that, endurance races and touring cars came to dominate the circuit. The images in this collection pay tribute to the racing cars and drivers who created the legend of the Nürburgring.
