The Balance of Performance, when managed by professional organisations, is a tricky business, despite all the data and figures provided by the racing teams. AVL from Austria meticulously draws up the best proposals for the ACO, to ensure a level playing field and to guarantee the most exciting race possible. The tactic used to counter this is known as ‘sandbagging’ – in other words, concealing one’s true capabilities until the season’s climax at Le Mans. The Le Mans category winners Michael Christensen, Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor did not always suffer as a result – particularly not when they outclassed the field with the ‘Pink Pig’ in 2018 – but in 2019 the Porsche RSR GTE failed to make an impact and finished only 9th in the fiercely contested class, behind Ferrari, Corvette and Ford.

Le Mans 24h 2020

United Autosports
Drivers: Filipe Albuquerque, Paul di Resta, Phil Hanson
Winner in LMP2 Category

Veni – vidi – vici. Filipe Albuquerque, Philip Hanson and Paul di Resta celebrated a thrilling LMP2 victory at the 2020 Le Mans race, which took place behind closed doors. Their Oreca 07 won a 24-hour race that was marred by numerous electronic problems affecting the Oreca cars. However, the United Autosport team enjoyed a virtually trouble-free race from the outset, thanks in part to the team’s flawless work. Shortly before the finish, a safety car period gave second-placed Team JOTA Sport renewed hope, as they closed the gap to Team United Autosport to just three seconds. Yet Hanson rose to the challenge ahead of the experienced Anthony Davidson to win at Le Mans, laying the foundations for the 2019/2020 FIA World Endurance Championship title secured later in 2020.

#0775 'Solitude Bleu Foncé'

Le Mans 24 Heures 1955

Panhard Monopole X88

“Dark Blue Solitude”

Francis Navarro and Jean de Montremy, driving a Monopole X88 Sport fitted with a 750 cc Panhard engine, brave the darkness and solitude on the tree-lined, ultra-long straight at Le Mans during the night-time practice session for the 24-hour race. The enthusiasm of the many small private teams is intended to be reflected in this watercolour. The vast blue night sky and the characteristic, yet faded pine forests are synonymous with the world of thoughts into which the drivers, spectators, team members and marshals drift during the long hours of the race. An image that epitomises the ‘Le Mans feeling’.
